Coastal CleanUp '08

The view at the coast

During my free time, I enjoy joining activities which I think is a complete breather from the usual routine that I have. It's always like doing something worthwhile at the same time doing something inordinary.
As I've recalled, I've attended once a coastal cleanup drive organized by our company held in Cordova, Lapu-lapu City, Cebu. I'll never forget the said activity because I was able to enjoy the sceneries at the same time gave something back to Mother Nature.

Environmentalists on the go!

The coastal cleanup was a drive to save the mangrove plantation and marine habitats abounding the shorelines of Cordova, a small barangay within the famous Mactan Island. The latter is known for its world class beaches and resorts and a favorite spot for marine and diving enthusiasts.
It was a lucky day indeed because the sun was not as prickly hot as it was for a normal day when we arrived. There were more than fifty volunteers who willingly shared their time and effort to heed Mother Nature's call. As the sun hid beneath the clouds that day and the tide turned its favor as well, we the volunteers had the greatest time of our lives seeing sea creatures and plants all over the place. With my not so high tech camera, I have had fun getting some nice shots.

Look a starfish!

Doing something for the greater good is far more fulfilling than spending a day in the mall, that's what I've realized after the event. So once in a while, it is best to do activities that will not only bring forth self satisfaction but also expose us to social awareness and responsibility. I already did! So will you?

Hadsan Beach Resort

I would never be tired of telling of the famous beaches of Mactan Island. As I've always mentioned in my previous posts, it is a favorite destination of diving, snorkelling, parasailing or just plain strolling. From the cheapest to the most expensive, one can choose among the array of resorts which truly are famous for their world class accomodation and hospitality.

A few weeks ago, our school held an alumni homecoming at Hadsan Beach Resort. It was the first time I've been to the place. The first thing I saw were trees, and lots and lots of coconut trees. The beach is so quiet except for the people buzzing around. The view is also good and as usual boasts the white sandy beach side.

Hadsan Beach

It is a perfect place for some nice talk and bonding with friends. Plus of course it's so budget friendly that the only thing you'll gonna prepare and spend with is the videoke machine asking 5 bucks per song.

Island Hopping

Cebu Province promises lots of pristine islands and islets for a great island hopping spree. And for our next stop, Olango Island. As the neighboring island of the world famous Mactan Island (not just as the place where Magellan died but famous for its world class shoreline and beachfront) , Olango is home to several sanctuaries. Diving activities are common within the area. The underwater magnificence and its exquisiteness attracts foreign and local divers alike. The marine sanctuary is noted for its still waters, a caution of its depth. Passing by the dark blue water develops an eerie feeling that at any moment something deep below will emerge and scare you bigtime. Imaginations.

The neighboring islets are as well bounded with powdery, white sands and a mix of blue and green waters. Fishes and unique marine creatures are thriving within the area.

So if you're planning for a Survivor-like weekend trip, find Olango Island on the map and indulge in a sun and sea encounter!

Blue Reef Resort

Located in Marigondon, Lapu-lapu City, Blue Reef Resort is a beach to go for a budget friendly escapade. Fees and expenses are within pocket limits and offers facilities for great fun and memorable swimming adventure. Everyone is invited to sing along with videoke machines at hand. For shrieks and thrills, the notable big slide located beside the swimming area are attraction for daredevils who wanted to slide their way for a smash in the waters.

Blue Reef Resort

Everyone would surely have a great time without having too much pressure on their wallets!

Maribago Blue Waters

Last summer, our company outing was held in Maribago Blue Waters, Lapu-lapu City. As its name implied, the place was surrounded by crystal blue waters and showcased a man-made island, recreation center, nature park and lots of amenities for a one-of-a-kind beach experience.

The place was a picture of beauty and elegance; a setting that was eye-friendly and relaxing. If bored, one can have fun in the recreation center playing ping-pong or just chill out in the lounge served with food and drinks. A pasalubong center was also available for souvenir items.

The Beauty that is Maribago

The man-made island was also an attraction with water encompassing the whole area with fine and white sands adding to its calm feel. It was a good venue for open sea swimming, sports activities and sun bathing.

Both local and foreign tourists are swarming in the area and do have a good time. It's a must see vacation getaway!

View From the Hills

It's always been a rewarding experience every time I visit charitable institutions that help other people in every way they can. Be it a home for the aged, an orphanage, or shelter for the less fortunate, being able to reach out is such a fulfilling activity.

Games Games Games

Last December, my colleagues decided to celebrate our Christmas party at Tabor Hills. I've never been there and the idea was a warm welcome to me. Situated in a highland somewhere in Talamban, overlooking a large portion of Cebu City, the institution was managed by Agustinian priests doing philantropic contribution to the less fortunate little children and nearby residents.
When we arrived at the place, it was indeed a site to behold. The place is a perfect getaway if one seeks solitude and peace of mind. It is a solemn haven for self introspection, prayer and keeping in touch with nature. The coolness and freshness of the atmosphere can wipe away the stress and pressure of everyday toil.

On Top of Tabor Hills

The Majestic Tabor Hills

It was a fun meet-and greet at first followed by a little program we've prepared for the kids. We had a lot of fun having games and taking pictures of the innocent little angels who were not so blessed enough of having parents to take care of them. Some came from nearby residents fostered as well by the Agustinian priests due to poverty.
Spending some time with the children somewhat brought me back to those times when I used to play in the rice fields and vast sugar cane plantation at home. I was once like those little children.

The Faces of Tabor Hills

The entire experience taught me to be thankful of everything I have now. I am here because I once was a child who vowed to go places and someday will return again to fulfill the promises I made to my loved ones. I was once in the children's shoes groping, seeking love and care and living life one day at a time. As the rice fields and sugar canes did inspire me way back at home, hopefully the view from the hills will also do the same and nurture the dreams of the less fortunate little children to someday find their own niche and come out stronger amidst adversities.

Discovering Davao

I’ve always wanted to travel around the world. Places like Vatican City, Lourdes in France, Japan, US and Singapore are destinations listed in my dream places to visit someday. Yes, someday if I have all the cash and means to do so. A scholarship agreement with the Philippine Government also hinders me to see those historic wonders I’ve always wish to set foot onto. Crossing my fingers, I have three more years left to fulfill my duties and prepare for my would be trips of a lifetime.

Anyways, despite my deprivation of the opportunity to discover places beyond my country, I realized that Philippines is after all an archipelago with the best scenic spots to visit. I've never seen many of the country’s flagship tourist destinations actually. Going there spells a lot of Peso signs and time which are the main factors why I haven't done so. Poor me, but I vowed to myself that someday I'll have photographs in those places; smiling and making the 'sideways peace sign'.Lols. But though I wasn't lucky enough to have visited Boracay or Puerto Galera, I've been in one place I wouldn’t forget seeing - the City of Davao.

Located in Southern Philippines in Mindanao Region, the city boasts its rich culture and tradition, warm people, beautiful sceneries and parks, Mt. Apo (Philippine’s highest peak), and the durian fruit. Davao City is one of the world's largest cities in terms of land area. The bustling city is home to many commercial and industrial businesses.Though I learned a little about the city and it was my first time to set foot on Mindanao, I've started to appreciate it the moment I arrived in the city's international airport.

Davao International Airport

Upon arrival, I've noticed the cool breeze soothing my allergic rhinitis -prone nose. It was a refreshing first impression. The sight from the plane was very relaxing on the eye.

The Giant Durian Statue

A warm welcome to Davao City

The above pictures were the must- see things around Davao International Airport. The giant durian statue shows the most abundant and favorite fruit of Dabaweños. The city is a major exporter of durian fruits around the world. Mind you, it is very delicious. Just ignore the smell and have fun savoring its sweetness and unexplainable taste.

My stay wasn't actually for the purpose of wandering around the city since I have a personal itinerary at hand but I caught glimpse of some notable places not to miss.

People's Park

If you wanted to find a nice, quiet place to stroll, People's Park is a promise of wonderful walk-in-a-park experience with its vast location and an array of eye-catching sites. It is like a plethora of nature and modern structure all rolled into one to give a tranquil and solemn atmosphere for some introspection and serene conversation.

Crocodile Farm

Small Eagle

Funny Ostrich

If you want a little adventure or maybe you wanted to overcome your phobia from rough animals with big and long fangs, Crocodile Farm is a guarantee in conquering your fears. Kingdom Animalia at its best, the place showcases several species securely caged for your worthwhile sight-seeing. Photographed above is a crocodile that almost look like fake due to its stillness. For minutes or even hours, the creature hasn't move an inch and the big jaw is at its widest. Just for some fun, passersby would run towards the cage and shout and then the almost desperate crocs starts to chase after them.

Davao is also home to the famous Philippine Eagle and is now bred in captivity in some government-owned and private animal shelter. I've recalled the ostrich above was a restless creature running to and fro and didn't care of pee-ing and scattering "popo's" in front of us.

St. Francis of Assisi Parish

Beautiful Wedding Flowers

My itinerary in Davao was really to attend a wedding and I happened to see the beautiful church as seen above. The church was located in Maa, Davao City and is famous for its stained glass design and garden-like interior. I've as well photographed the flowers during the wedding because it was really beautifully-arranged.

There were lots and lots of places to go in Davao. And hopefully I could go back and see more someday. As for now, I'll just enjoy the memories of places that I've visited and the awesome people I've met. Discover Davao, discover beauty.
